mating owls in the backyard were a bit of a highlight at the pi party friday. i missed it, i'm afraid, but i'm not shocked. it appears we live on something of a nature reserve.
in a very sweet email from the lovely christy yesterday, inspired no doubt my the coupling birdies, she mentioned owl pellets. i'll let her explain: "Secondly, do you know about owl pellets? The indigested remains of their prey? You can sometimes find them underneath the trees where they nest. They look like dried whitish shapes with bones and hair in them. Very cool. i found one in my yard last year. I keep looking for more. Okay...have a great week." (sidenote: is it any wonder why i thick christy is the bee's knees?)
having never heard of owl pellets, i did a bit of research. disturbingly, there is quite an internet market for the little backyard gems. an example:
